Frequently Asked Questions

What is Community Solar?

Community Solar is a state program that has been passed by legislation in over 24 states in the U.S so far. It's an alternative for those who can't or don't want to have panels on their own roof.

This state program requires utilities to participate, so everyone who pays a utility bill can subscribe if we have solar farms connected to their utility. This program is helping residents support solar energy generation in their state and also get some savings on their electricity bill.

How does the Neighborhood Sun program work?

When you subscribe, we use your past 12 months of electricity usage to determine the right solar subscription size for you – typically sized to cover most of your annual energy needs. You'll be connected to a portion of a nearby community solar farm that generates clean energy on your behalf.

Each month, your portion of the solar farm produces energy that gets fed into the local electrical grid. Delmarva Power & Light then applies solar credits to your bill based on how much energy your share generated. These credits reduce your DPL bill dollar-for-dollar, just like having solar panels on your own roof.

The savings come from Neighborhood Sun offering you a discount on the value of those solar credits. You'll continue getting your regular DPL bill, but with lower costs thanks to your solar credits and our discount.

Do I need to own my home or apartment to participate?

Not at all! Renters, condo residents and homeowners can all participate – no installation required. This program is perfect if you can't install rooftop solar panels due to rental restrictions, too much shade or tree coverage around your property, roof age or condition issues, or if you simply prefer not to have panels on your roof. Community solar gives you access to clean energy savings regardless of your housing situation or property limitations.

Do I need to install panels on my roof or property?

No solar panels or installations necessary. It’s simple to get started with no additional sign-up fees.

Are there any sign-up fees?

It’s free to enroll, with no upfront costs. If you choose to cancel for any reason, or move out of Delmarva Power & Light's service area, there’s no fee to cancel.

Can I enroll in community solar if I have solar panels installed on my house?

Yes, if you have solar panels installed on your residence, and they don't generate 100% of your energy, you can subscribe to the community solar program. Your share will be based on the additional energy that is being supplied by the utility so it will be a smaller share of the solar farm.

How much can I save?

You’ll save at least 10% on your monthly electricity costs when you pay with a credit or debit card, check or auto debit from your bank. Savings of 20% are available for income-qualified residents. Either way, your savings are guaranteed.

What does it mean to be "Income-Qualified?"

Income-qualified means your household income falls within specific guidelines that make you eligible for additional savings on your community solar subscription. These income limits are typically set at or below certain percentages of the Area Median Income (AMI) for your region.

Persons in Household Maximum Income Amount
1 $68,500
2 $78,250
3 $88,050
4 $97,800
5 $105,650
6 $113,450
7 $121,300
8 $129,100

Can small businesses or commercial properties sign up?
Yes! Some small businesses and commercial properties can subscribe to community solar. To start the process, please email a copy of your most recent commercially-metered bill to subscribe@neighborhoodsun.solar. We will review your bill and see if community solar is available for your electricity needs.
What happens to my utility account?

Nothing. You’ll continue to have an account with Delmarva Power & Light, and start to save money.

Will I continue to receive a bill from Delmarva Power & Light (DPL)?

Yes, your DPL bill will show a credit for the solar energy allocated to you. There is no change to your DPL service. You’ll receive a monthly invoice from Neighborhood Sun for your solar credits, but your discount will be applied, saving you money on your electricity costs.

When will I be billed for my community solar credits?

You will receive an invoice for your solar credits after the utility applies them to your electric bill. It usually takes between 30 to 60 days to receive your Neighborhood Sun invoice for the credits applied to your bill. Typically, you will receive your invoice on the 15th of the month, and it will be automatically processed seven days later.

Please be aware that occasionally there may be delays in receiving the solar credit data from the utility provider. Rest assured, we will notify you via email if any delays occur!

Where can I find my account number?

Your existing utility account number can be found on your Delmarva Power & Light utility bill or by signing into your utility account online.

Why do you need payment information?

As a member of Neighborhood Sun, solar credits will automatically be applied to your utility bill, reducing the amount you owe to the utility. Then, you receive a monthly bill from Neighborhood Sun for the cost of those solar credits (which is the renewable energy that you used to power your home) with your discount applied, which is why we require a payment method on file.

Are you an electricity supplier (ESCO)?

No, Neighborhood Sun is a community solar acquisition and management organization, which is not the same as a third-party retail energy supplier. Instead, Neighborhood Sun provides solar electricity to your utility company and you get a credit for the value of the electricity generated on your behalf. Your discount is also guaranteed for up to 20 years, unlike retail energy suppliers who offer short-term savings and can change rates often.

When will I receive my gift card?

You’ll receive your electronic gift card once you have received and paid for your first month's of community solar credits. We will send your gift card to the email address you provided during enrollment.

What's the catch?

No catch! - this is designed as a win-win program. You save money on your electricity costs while supporting Maryland's clean energy goals. Neighborhood Sun benefits by building a customer base for community solar projects, and utilities like Delmarva Power & Light are required by Maryland law to source a portion of their electricity from renewable resources to achieve 100% clean energy by 2035.

Community solar programs help meet these state requirements while providing residents with immediate savings. You keep DPL as your electric company, maintain the same reliable service, and simply enjoy lower monthly bills through solar credits and discounts.
